A child’s acquisition of speech and language abilities is a natural developmental process that all children go through with varying degrees of difficulty. For most children speech is developed within the normal time period but for some children there maybe more significant problems developing language and a delay in the time frame of when that language development occurs. Language development can be delayed even further if the child has an East Harlem learning disability.
For those children that do have an East Harlem learning disability individual speech therapy with a licensed Speech Language Pathologist such as our practices’ Stacey Miller, SLP can help them overcome their learning disability and smooth the acquisition of language. The intervention starts with our SLP conducting a complete and comprehensive evaluation of the child’s communications skills, which includes an assessment of their oral motor abilities as well as formal and informal testing and observations. From this evaluation a written report will be generated and a comprehensive therapy plan will be developed. For those children who will benefit from individual speech therapy our therapist will schedule either, 30-, 45- or 60-minute sessions that will hone in on their specific needs. For instance, expressive and receptive language delays where the child is having difficulty making ideas or needs known as well as having trouble following directions or with basic understanding. Oral motor delays and feeding difficulties are addressed with the aid of specific exercises and massage techniques. Our SLP will also work with children with learning disabilities on articulation, the ability to make specific sounds, which maybe impaired due to the movement of the lips, tongue, velum or pharynx.
Our therapist also works with children that have an East Harlem learning disability in a group setting. Socialization groups help those children that have difficulty in building friendships due to social and pragmatic delays in language development. If you suspect your child is having difficulty or is delayed in developing speech and language call our office for an evaluation appointment.
